Search Lemmyverse is good for finding communities.
I posted this on the other site but I thought I’d copy over here too, lots of good communities around to subscribe to if you want a more casual/fun frontpage that isn’t just tech news, elon musk, or politics.
note: all of these communities have posts. If they appear empty, it simply means nobody on the instance you use has visited them before (or you might have blocked them and forgot, I’ve done it before, lol)!
Conversation communities
These are places that are ‘chatty’, good if you want a lot of comments.

Music
Lots of music communities on Lemmy. Search Lemmyverse for genres of interest for more, this definitely isn’t exhaustive.
Note that music communities generally have low comment counts, from my experience.
- I made a fuller list of British music genres/communities/artists here (e.g grime, dnb, jungle, uk hh, idm, rock/metal/punk, etc)
There’s also:
I would kindly redirect any kind comments you have, or suggests for items to add, to @[email protected], the original creator of the list.
I am but a humble cross-poster.
Thank you for this!
OP you deserve so much more than an upvote for this compilation - this is truly impressive. I had no idea I was missing out on so many yarncraft communities! I will rectify this ASAP thanks to you.
I personally use search-lemmy.com regularly to find topics I like and see which communities pop up.
Thank you, added at least 15 communities from this list. :)
And nice to see at least some communities that aren’t from Lemmy.world or Lemmy.ml. I think it’s really important for the health of the fediverse to have many active communities across many different instances.
Since week one I’ve been planning to join another smaller instance and never get around to it.
We should have a ‘discover instance’ day or something where people are encouraged to explore other areas of the fediverse, because if I’m anything to go off of it doesn’t happen naturally.
Join mine, it needs more users, specially active ones. :)
Great post
You put a lot of effort into this. Thank you
Yeah they did, thanks OP I subbed to a few.
I run [email protected], which is for any all video game related art.
Thank god dude I was about to delete this app from the amount of politics and agenda pushing
[email protected] for all those who appreciate the art of street and documentary photography. It is a difficult genre that requires more than a single glance to appreciate. I try to post regularly on there.
Added it to the original list :)
Hi, can I get [email protected] added under music? Thanks
Added this to the original list
I wish I could find any (decently active) for people who make music.
/r/audioengineering and /r/WeAreTheMusicMakers were two big music production communities over on Reddit, and I occasionally search to see if there has been an influx of users on the kinda dead music-making communities here. So far no luck!
Thanks for sharing! I subscribed to several new communities from this list.
List after list of communities and then…
“Meme communities can overload your feed, so keep that in mind”
…
?
It’s less of an issue than it used to be but it’s likely still true if you aren’t subscribed to many communities; the large meme sublemmies (e.g [email protected]) get a disproportional amount of posts, & posts that are highly upvoted, which leads to them dominating feeds. It doesn’t help that Lemmy’s “hot” and “Active” feeds just aren’t that good at diversifying content.
Thanks.^^
