HATED Gambon as Dumbledore. I got desensitized to it eventually, but to this day I can barely make it through Prisoner of Azkaban and Goblet of Fire because of him.

I know it’s a meme, but couldn’t pass up another opportunity to voice my displeasure.

Is he even in PoA that much? It’s been a couple years since I watched the movie, but don’t remember many notable scenes with him until the time-turner scenes at the end, where I though he was okay.

Gambon improved as the films progressed, but he really missed the mark on GoF. I’m holding out hope for the new TV series. Who would you cast as Dumbledore now?

I have a hard time expressing this every time I try, but there was always an edge to him that I think neither Harris nor the book portrayed. (Don’t get me started on the whole “I didn’t even read the source material” aspect.) IMO Harris came off as far too aloof and confident in his own power to ever rage at Harry the way Gambon did or otherwise react with the sort of passionate and emotion-laden way that Gambon did to various events. I think Dumbledore worked better with the aloof confidence. I acknowledge that this is very subjective.

I think John Noble would be great today. I also want him to be The Doctor at some point. :)

I’m holding out hope for the new TV series.

I thought WoT would be a dumpster fire (love the books, just no faith in a TV adaptation) and I was really wrong, it’s very good IMO. So I’m cautiously optimistic on the idea of a HP show also.

Nah the whole point was that dumbledore was a sleeper build. Elderly, frail looking, and weird in a way that suggested he wasn’t all there in the head despite still being basically the apex of the Wizarding world at the time. I don’t think we ever saw him do anything truly powerful until his showdown in the ministry in book 5. Gambon kind of dicked that up in the very beginning. He spoke with way too much poise and power. It was easy to believe he was a strong wizard, which again was not the point.
