    The (arguably) richest guy in the world is starting pride month by stating he will financially bankroll the trans genocide attempt. This seems potentially much more dangerous than even elected officials like DeSantis becoming president, as Elon can theoretically just buy a group of politicians to carry out his vision. Not just in the USA either, anywhere where politicians can be bought is at risk of this ideology being exported to their nations. Am I wrong here? This seems like a massive risk for the trans community.

    Vote. In. Every. Election.

    If you know an 18 year old, go to the polls with them. Help get them started. If you know someone whom doesn’t vote, convince them to vote.

    We outnumber all of these fascists and if we all voted (and I don’t care who you vote for) then the power of these billionaire would be severely diminished.

    There are so many problems on display here.

    1. Musk thinks his medical opinion is informed and important enough to overrule doctors treating individual kids.

    2. This news organization seems to think his uneducated opinion is important enough to report on.

    3. They’re misreporting what he said anyway. They’re conflating the very broad term of gender affirming care, with his more specific objection to nonreversible treatments.

    4. The lack of informed nuance in both Musk’s opinion and the reporting here, is why this shouldn’t be spread accept to discredit both the article and Musk.

    The thing that people on the right don’t seem to understand is gender affirming care is widely available/accepted for cisgender people, but they start screaming when it involves trans folks (and call it grooming). By Elon’s logic, you should criminalize doctors that provide gender affirming care to anyone.

    I used to feel supportive of this guy and his efforts with SpaceX even if he is an oligarch. Now everytime he speaks he reveals another sliver of his actual, corrupt, morally bankrupt and entitled self.

      I remember learning about him a few years ago through SpaceX and then Tesla and being like: “Huh. Someone with money helping advance science.”

      Fast forward to today, and every time I see his name in an article, I’m expecting it to be associated with some dumb stuff he’s said or done. And most of the time that expectation is correct.

      I think he’s always been this way to be honest. It just happens some of his ploys happen to be in areas that I appreciate seeing the push in (spaceflight, quality internet access in rural areas, electric cars). I can appreciate those good aspects while also acknowledging and denouncing him for being an awful egotistical jerk

        yeah, this is a big worry (in the same way J.K. Rowling is)–people of this magnitude and influence in society can’t really be ignored in full, because a lot of people might be swayed by their significance alone into thinking something they believe is acceptable. Elon is more impulsive and, i dunno, eclectic? than Rowling, so that might temper his efficacy or even desire to do this, but it’d still be really bad if he actually started doing this because he can presumably manufacture an astonishing amount of consent if he wants to do that. far more than Rowling can, also.

          I used to have enormous respect for Rowling since she was one of the only (if not the only?) billionaires to donate so much money to charity that she’s no longer a billionaire. That’s great, and if every billionaire did that the world would be a much better place. And of course I grew up with Harry Potter.

          And I remember when I first heard about her views on trans people, there was a moment where I was like “Wait she’s a good person though, right? Is she actually onto something here?” Which led to me reading way more about her views than I otherwise would have.

          And of course she’s not onto anything and is just being a TERF, and I wish she would just swallow her pride and admit she’s wrong and apologize, but the point is: yes, these people have a lot of influence and can’t be ignored. There are probably people who, like me, respected Rowling, but then didn’t bother to follow up and have been led down an anti-trans path.

          Influential people need to be called out on their shit.
