A few days ago I created a reddit account just for “taking part in the discussion.” However, here are the absolutely frustrating experiences I had:
-
You can create an account if you give reddit your email, but you CANNOT login via reddit’s onion URL. Reddit will keep having “we had a problem,” and “an error with the server occurred”, after you have solved your 5th captcha with a screenful of bicycles to click on. No way to login anonymously.
-
You will have to login to your account via the clearnet URL of reddit. Damn… But OK, everything for " contributing to the community, we are a diverse one, after all right? Make your voice heard". Alright. I login on clearnet. Reddit still gives me a red banner with some error message, like a sack of shit splashing on my desk, but lets me in this time. Good, finally “be a part of the conversation!”. Start my first thread announcing my Turkish translation of monero.garden (see MoneroBahce.com). Hit send. Instantly reddit filters my post. My post and voice are not visible whatsoever.
Seriously, why are we taking reddit seriously as a discussion platform; and moreover, why are we making it the centrepiece of written, long-form Monero discussion? Why is that place have such a large role in taking a pulse of the Monero users?
Thats why we are here on Lemmy, if we don’t contribute to the reddit discussion, and keep our voices here, and keep our frequency here, the discussion will move here.
If we post to reddit and here, there is no reason for people to leave reddit. I know when your advertising a product/service your just trying to get the message out, fair enough. Just in general, Lemmy exists because reddit has abused their central position

You don’t. You keep your voice here and only here and fuck reddit and the rest of them. If those Reddit people not quality content, they will just have to come here.
In the past, Reddit was the place where the Monero community met for many years. This is now a thing of the past. Ever since people started accepting unacceptable terms and conditions when using Reddit, its use has been frowned upon and widely avoided.
I gave up on Reddit, the best is to be active and grow alternatives like monero.town
Bitching about reddit on lemmy, are we?
What’s your point?
FYI parts of the Monero community also exists on Retroshare and Bastyon, both are decentralized alternatives and can serve as a backup for Monero Town shall it ever go down. This way we do not end up going back to reddit.
Retroshare
Sounds great in principle. But I installed it and it has an absolutely horrendous UI. I will check the Monero community on Retroshare, though. How do I join them?
That is why it is called"retro" 😜
Take a look at this post for instructions https://monero.town/post/3403898
Got it, thanks.
Yeah I just noticed I’m shadow banned. At least I can pm people.
We use it to gain/aid a growing audience. Same reason/function as the monero discord server.
Are they the same mods of the Telegram group?
I’m not sure because I don’t use the platform. Monero being a privacy-focused community kinda negates the potential of this inquiry as well, but I am curious about what led to this question as well.
I had bad experience with the moderation of that group, no rules.
Because of this post here, I’ve been on Reddit again for a long time. It worked flawlessly in the Tor browser. Without user login, just to read.
If someone wants to discuss a Reddit post, they can link that post here on Monero.Town. Then, if the posts here are better than the posts on Reddit, users will start linking to them here. This will eventually bring users here.
Without user login, just to read.
That’s not the issue here. The issue is: a new monero community member cannot create a new reddit account and partake in the discussions there. You absolutely cannot create new threads on reddit as a new user (ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE REGISTERED VIA THE ONION URL OF REDDIT). You will 1) get filtered by reddit’s auto-filters 2) get filtered by monero subreddit mods’ autofilters.
If someone wants to discuss a Reddit post, they can link that post here on Monero.Town. Then, if the posts here are better than the posts on Reddit, users will start linking to them here. This will eventually bring users here.
That sounds like a good transition strategy to the Town.
Someone who is active on Reddit can post a link to the Town here as early as possible in the discussion in posts that were originally only available on Reddit but are now also being discussed here.
Or even just reply/contribute to the discussion here but quote there on Reddit and link to here.
