Microsoft explains that Call of Duty doesn’t have to be on every console, because it isn’t that important to the video game industry.

I feel like they should not be the ones making that judgement when deciding if some company is going to be buying up large portions of an industry.

Cod is like one of the few games non gamers play. People buy consoles just to play it. They either insanely out of touch or they couldn’t think of a better excuse

aren’t they just admitting that they do vertical bundling ? assuming its fairly cheap to allow cod on steamdeck.

so the issue should be “how much does or would that bundling harm call of duty consumers (including marginal non-buyers)” by reducing their choices.

Steam deck isn’t entering the market of “hardware that cod players can use” so not relevant to that segment of the hardware market.

what is relevant is the market for FPS software (and play servers?), whether a steamdeck user can buy a reasonable substitute ; how good of a substitute it is determines the level or harm.
so if most players are near-indifferent to switching to a steamdeck FPS, then the bundling is not very harmful.

that’s why bundling , say, photoshop with windows would be worse - as lots of ps customers will have a high cost of switching -because they don’t want to be called gimps.

What numbers specifically are you referring to?

          Why so defensive?
I love my deck, I got one of the early 512 GB units, but even in the article you linked they are saying that “It is clear Steam Deck remains a niche portion of the PC gaming landscape”. Did you read it?

Sadly, 3 million is nothing next to the over 129 million from the Switch, for example. Regardless of how superior it is to the Switch in several aspects.

I do have hopes for the numbers to improve, but I wouldn’t say it has reached the levels of mainstream devices just yet.

First of all this isn’t politics. It’s a video game toy. And not sure why my question made you think I’m unable to read sales numbers. I literally asked you what number you’re referring to.

Anyhow: 3 million is not impressive. Consoles sell millions a day. 3 million is a joke. The Nokia handheld console N Gage sold 3 million in the same amount of time.

          The Nokia N GAGE.

          This thing:

          https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/N-Gage_(device)#/media/File%3ANokia-NGage-LL.jpg

A device that’s considered to be the ultimate butt of jokes in the gaming world. Second to only the Nintendo virtual boy.

That said, sales don’t determine if a device is good or not. I’m sure the Steak Deck is absolutely wonderful. And I had it pre-order day one. I just don’t game as much lately so I couldn’t justify the purchase on release. Didn’t want to have a device sitting around; after not using my Valve Index I became more hesitant about buying more hardware.

          From your own source:

“It is clear Steam Deck remains a niche portion of the PC gaming landscape,” commented James McWhirter, Senior Analyst covering Games at Omdia. “However, this is unlikely to deter Valve, which has plans beyond just selling hardware units.”

The steak deck doesn’t need to be successful in sales to be a great product. It’s a PC with a different form factor. There’s no downside to it being unpopular as long as you enjoy it.

100% correct, steam deck haters can cry some more. The numbers don’t lie, steam deck is doing great. Completely agree. No lie detected.
