I have one of the kobo Libra color ereaders, the saturation is definitely muted and there is a bit of a screen door effect but overall it’s pretty cool.

I did hate the screen door at first though, like a lot. Curious to see one of these in real life. The online reviews of the Libra basically overlooked the negatives and now I’m skeptical of everything haha.

(I have the Boox go color) and the layers don’t bother me at all. The color needs ambient light to really shine, but for normal black and white content I don’t see it as downgraded vs a non color 300ppi screen at all. It looks at least as crisp as an actual book to me.

Screen door effect on VR headsets is a huge deal I can’t get past, while others seem to not notice it at all, so maybe there’s just a difference in how people perceive it. Or maybe there’s some kind of micro difference in alignment that affects perceived clarity.

I’ve been making an uneducated guess that the screen alignment may be a hard-to-solve problem. Holding my Libra and Libra color next to each other you can see a noticeable difference in the clarity of black and white text.

I had the poke 5 that I’m comparing it to (unfortunately water damage sucks and someone spilled on it), and while I can definitely see the layer (and for color the lower resolution is noticeable), I have to try to do so, and it’s not until you zoom in (and add the shitty processing of phone cameras) that it gets obvious to me (and there’s a matte anti-glare film over the top).

I was also reasonably happy on 220 PPI on the boox Max 3 (out of circulation until I put a new battery in), though. That is a touch further away for the larger screen, though, so IDK. Resolution bothers me more on LCD/OLED than eink for whatever reason.
