Hi, my laptop got fried because of getting caught in the rain :(
I got a gaming laptop for work a few years ago, because appearantly the CPU AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX was about the best thing to be found for updating some ridiculously complicated excel power query circusses at work, according to the internet back then (i think I found that info on pc master race on reddit before the reddit-api-fall), and finding those CPU’s in business laptops was rather difficult at the time. They were right, this CPU handled the queries like a walk in the park.
Is the AMD Ryzen 9 6900H* still a very good CPU for this kind of thing, or should I put in a lot more time investigating again, is there better cost-efficiency available now in other CPU?
Sorry if this is not a right place for this question. I’m usually not really a hardware guy. Just need a CPU that handles this Excel shit as fast as possible, preferably without locking up the entire machine and without being as noisy as an F16 getting ready for lift off. On “regular” work laptops with i5 or i7, these files can take literally over an hour to update.
*HX - mobile workstation
*H / *HS - laptop
*U / *P - ultrabookRyzen AI - current gen amd
Ryzen 7x4x / Ryzen 8x4x - last gen amd
Ryzen 6xxx / Ryzen 7x3x - prev gen amd
Core Ultra 1xx / Core 14xxx - current gen intel
Core 1xxx / Core 13xxx - last gen intel
Core 12xxx - prev gen intelGeneration is the most important factor for single thread performance, then power usage and lastly sku.
You could go for an *HX or *H model from a recent gen for an upgrade or if you’re fine with the performance you had you could also get a *U model as those are cheaper, more silent and use less power. It’s actually surprising that your laptop wasn’t that loudAlso the next intel generation is soon to come with big improvements I think, but it’ll probably take time for it to be sold
Thanks! Do you think I’ld be good with this for example:
I9 13900h. On paper it beats the bit more expensive ryzen 9 6900hx version by about 10 % in single thread.
Tho the difference in default clock speed is in favor of the ryzen?

Main use are big excel queries, power apps builder, power bi etc…
It’d be good I think, especially if the 105W is the cooling capacity
Here are some benchmarks for modern laptops in office tasks:

I think the 5900HX should be about equivalent to your 6900HX.
Laptop cpus have come a long way from the Intel CPUs in 2020.
Amd cpus are a lot easier to find nowadays. The framework 13 amd is a really nice lightweight laptop that scores well here with its 7840u.
Tho i like repairability, I’m afraid the framework looks too expensive compared to hardware specs, can’t get that passed the boss probably. Looking for a 15-16" screen.
