Child Protective Services (or w/e ya call em). Should take these children away from the parents and hold the parents liable
Over reacting is as unjust as under reaction. There’s a veneer of self righteous bullying dripping from that reaction of “break up their families and make them suffer!”
The parent’s are obviously inept at raising their child and don’t deserve to be a parent.
Parents are responsible for virtually everything their child does, so if they murder someone why are they not held liable for that?
Hold the child responsible for their actions with the parent as a custodian. The parent is now an unpaid parole officer who monitors the child and if the kid does something stupid again, they’ll we have a pattern and can condemn them for being a bad parent.
Bad luck exists and robbing a person of their future of they weren’t willful is just as bad as taking their life.

I initially thought this was about a story here in Seattle. Just about a week ago, an 80-year-old dog walker was murdered here as well.
