I was reading chapter 1 of chainsaw man again (Started 2 years ago) and it felt like I was reading it for the first time. Like I literally forgot that it was his father’s debt or that he sold his nut or even that it was the yakuza that tried to kill him. I know the very bare skeleton story, but I easily forget details in between.

Should I go to a doctor or am I overthinking it?

It’s called the serial-position effect and it’s nothing to worry about.

You’ll mostly remember the start and the end of a story than the middle of the story (unless the middle of the story has something more memorable than the ending and the beginning of a story).

uhh. Then OP just forgot it probably because it wasn’t that exciting to OP or something. I’ve even forgotten everything about some mangas and animes after a few years of watching it because I watched/read alot of other things after it.

Yeah, me too. I think it was just a lack of reinforcement of those earlier plot points because most of them are literally never mentioned after chapter 1.

Aren’t all the plot points you mentioned basically forgotten by the story itself in a few chapters? Once they start fighting devils and Denji meets all the other characters the plot becomes more about his relationships with those characters, and then about Makima’s plans.

Well, you’re right, it’s just that when I read it again it felt like I’m finding those out for the first time. Maybe I’m doing anime/manga wrong. My obsession with small details like those are probably cause of Attack on Titan lol

I don’t think there’s a wrong way to enjoy stories, some people are keen on the “lore” and backstory while others are more interested in the larger scale story or the relationships between characters.

That extends to authors too, some of them put more emphasis on different aspects of their story which may appeal more to certain readers/viewers than others.

Nah, that’s a blessing, you can experience Chainsaw man again almost like the first time, that awesome.

Go to the doctor immediately. Forgetting the plot points of the initial story arc of any manga is a genuine sign of IBS, which as we know can cause enhanced toilet awareness.
