Hi all, through my experience, the third party apps that are supposed to do this a pure trash. I mean true caller was pretty decent, but it was packed with ads and trackers of course and the overbearing permissions that constantly tries hijacking my set SMS and dialer apps… I don’t think using a third party app is the right solution.
I came across an internet protocol called NCID which is network callet ID, which sounds quite interesting, but strangely there is little documentation and virtually no online community discussion about this.
So I’m wondering what are some good caller ID options available? I’m a private person and I like knowing who is calling also, would like to stop spam. I’m sure there’s a whole world dedicated to this such stuff, but I can’t seem to find the solution. And tips or advice or anything would be great. Thanks
The one on my Pixel works really well
Also using the Google Phone app for this reason on my Samsung, works great wouldn’t even think of moving to another service at this point in time.
But what if you no longer want to attach more info to google? I mean can it be used without a google account?
I never pick up an unknown number. If it’s important, they will eventually message or email me. Don’t hang up on those calls either. If you do, they’ll know you’re there and will add you to their database. Just leave it ringing on silent. Some phones can also auto reroute unknown callers to the voicemail.
Yes!I have heard this before. I tried telling my parents, who are plagued by spam calls, to not engage with them but of course they like to answer and yelll at them or answer and hang up lol
Check with your carrier and see if they have a dedicated app. When I had AT&T, they had an excellent spam blocker. I haven’t haven’t checked with my new carrier because the built-in spam blocker on pixel is very good.
Hmm koler sounds interesting… Any experience with it?
it works fine. i had no problems with it. No ads or trackers.
it’s openContacts that does the filtering, blocking, identification &c
I’m using Yet Another Call Blocker and I think it does exactly what you want… Use it along with your dial app of preference (I am using simple dialer).
Thanks. I have come across that and I was actually going to make a new post about this concern… So it appears yet another caller hasn’t been updated in years, so it seems abandoned to me. Are those even safe to use? I don’t know enough to tell, but my mind tells me abandoned or way outdated apps pose risks?
I use Yet Another Call Blocker too, and although the app hasn’t been updated in a while, the database is updated daily.
I am not sure about what security risks there could be with this app not being updated in 1.5 years, since it only connects to the internet to download database updates. I am happy to be educated about the security risks that using this “old” app could have.
I can’t get yet another call blocker to work! Do you have to set it as your default phone app? Because I currently have simple dialer as my default phone app and yet another call blocker set as my default caller ID and spam blocking app, yet its doing nothing at all
It should work as default “Caller ID and spam app”. Check the FAQ in their website, as the behaviour can change depending on your phone manufacturer
To be honest I didn’t even realize it wasn’t updated in a long time lol.
I only got it because someone else recommended it here on Lemmy and I wanted to ditch Google Dialer (which would get rid of their own blocker).
So far since I did the change seems to block unwanted stuff, and I don’t know if it helps, but seems that some calls/numbers are reviewed online?
As I said, I didn’t look hard on this, and since it is working I have no complaints for now, but if someone is willing to make this clearer for us I would be glad :)
Hey thanks dude. I’m currently trying to use yet another call blocker and it isn’t doing shit. Do you HAVE to set it as your default phone app? I currently have simple dialer as default phone but yet another call blocker set as the default caller ID and spam blocker, though its doing nothing…
AFAIK only put it as the blocker ID within Android settings, it should block stuff.
Ok, I think I had to enable monitoring service in the settings. Haven’t received any calls yet to see lol but at least when I open yacb, I now see the added business names and ratings and reviews
That’s cool, hopefully that made it!
Do it the American way: just bribe enough politicians, and you will eventually get a law that finally Puts an end to this.
Don’t expect them to do something just so, their calls and mails get filtered by a pool of people, they never see this kind of stuff.
@Macaroni9538 Also using the Google Phone app. They say it’s best on a Pixel, but it works ok on my Samsung.
