Solid. Compared to the old anime, music isn’t quite as good, bloodier, more focus on Aoshi.
I haven’t gotten to watch this season yet, but if they are spending some more time on Aoshi, then it could be good. His state of mind changes a lot through this arc and if they can motivate those changes well, then it should be good. Hopefully, they can also make his and Misao’s relationship a bit more fleshed out.
It all depends on how the season unfolds though, so time will tell. I am looking forward to watching it, I have just had a tough time syncing up my schedule with my wife’s since she wanted to watch as well.
I think the first anime handled Aoshi’s thought process in this episode more clearly. In this one it’s as opaque as the manga, even though Aoshi got a little more camera time.
That isn’t terribly surprising then. In talking about the first season with my wife, I had some complaints about it, but she (a manga reader) basically said that they stuck a lot closer to the manga, warts and all. I get that the manga is a highly influential and respected work, but changes here and there can really help an adaptation find success in a different medium. My favorite adaptation of the Kenshin story so far are the live action movies and they made a ton of changes.
The preview for this week’s episode is mostly Aoshi monologuing, but it’s funny rather than insightful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lh0ciz8yWDk
