I played from 2010 till around 2016. The only paid mods like Clockwork mods were heavily ridiculed and even almost sued since they were making money off something that wasn’t their ip (this was 10+ years ago, I’m sure I’m misremembering).
Donations for in game perks have always been a thing, and the server owner would use said donations to have custom things made sure, but the very vast majority of regular players never once even thought of paying for mods.
I’ve been seeing a loooooooot of koffi links in workshop pages lately. And not just for GMod, but Zomboid as well.
Which, I get it. It’s a side project done out of passion for the game, so they may stick a link in their mod description for some tips if people feel like it. I don’t think I’d ever personally do it though.
