Just an FYI, if you ask a Republican, they will say that they’re on the side of patriotism and intelligence and that the left is superstitious and ignorant. Definitely a line between political parties, but I don’t think it’s really a gotcha to claim that “when Ulysses S Grant predicted one side being patriotic and intelligent, he was talking about our side.”

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not defending Republicans, and I’m definitely not defending Trump, so I’m going to pre-emptively request that you not tell me things like “well Trump’s a bigot and felon so anyone who votes for him is ignorant” and expect me to put up any sort of defense. All I’m saying is they see themselves as patriotic and intelligent, as any thinker who favors their country would.

The right likes to cosplay patriotism and parrot the language around the core values of liberty, equality and democracy, all while supporting policies that are antithetical to those values.

I wish the Democrats would do a better job of tying their policies to that legacy and pointing out just how full of shit the MAGA crowd is when they try act like they own the American revolution while also openly supporting calls for a dictator.

Other than discounting any statements attributing positive qualities to a party being discussed because some people will inevitably disagree, I don’t really know that this has any pertinence.

but I don’t think it’s really a gotcha to claim that “when Ulysses S Grant predicted one side being patriotic and intelligent, he was talking about our side.”

What if I add the context that this was in the middle of a speech advocating for public, state-funded schools, explicitly free of religious instruction?
