Title! Sync has been my daily driver for over a decade now, and i’ve gotten far more than my money worth out of Pro & Dev. With the news of Sync for Lemmy, I’ve joined the Sync Lifetime club (long overdue tbh)

If you’ve gotten similar mileage & want to thank LJ for everything he’s done (and has committed to keep doing), lets make sure to thank him both publically and financially :)

Why buy a project that is going to get abandoned and get a cut to Google? Wouldn’t a direct donation and then buying the new app make more sense? Am I missing something?

You’re definitely missing something. Theres no announcement that Sync Ultra is being abandoned (presumably, as a subscription service, its brought along to the new app) & there doesn’t appear to be any other way to directly donate to LJ (i’ve asked)

Worst case scenario in which it doesn’t port over, I spent $30 on app that i’ve used daily without a subscription for over a decade. Good spend imo

There’s the patreon though. I can buy ultra once there’s lemmy ultra, since the apps probably won’t be merged.

Sync has always meant Sync for reddit so I would interpret the lifetime Sync Ultra subscription as the lifetime of the project which is indeed shutting down. The new app will probably have similar monetization and may grandfather in the subscriber of the old program but I would not consider it obvious. The fact that there are no direct donations options changes my perspective and I agree with you that in that case it would be a good way to show support. I think I will wait and buy the new app as soon as it is out, this way I will still contribute financially, I will boost sales and so visibility of the new project and I will not have to worry about having the perks from the old subscription hereditated to the new one. If Sync for Lemmy takes off it could be interesting to set up an official instance with associated something like liberapay for donations, but right now I wouldn’t take the focus away from the Android client.
