Jesus fucking Christ, the sheer volume of escape hatches these assholes can find. We’re not even talking about whether a thing happened or whether what happened was illegal - it’s appeal after appeal to dodge those questions altogether. And listen, one hearing for ‘is this even a thing?’ is understandable. But why the fuck does every level of the American court system have a six-month delay to go ‘okay but what if nuh-uh?’ We have to go, yes it’s a thing. Yes it’s still a thing. Yes it is in fact a thing. Yes the thing-ness of the thing actually fucking matters. Yes we can finally ask about what fucking happened and whether it was fraud.
And inevitably these assholes will also get to play ‘but what if nuh-uh?’ over the decision. And if they can’t dodge being told that yes they did it and yes it’s a crime and yes they do have to pay, they might just… not. Forcing the aggrieved to sue them again, starting this horseshit all over.
All things considered, this country has an admirably low rate of arson.
