Further complicating the situation: The body camera footage released by HPD contains three gaps totaling about 11 minutes. HPD officials have refused to comment on the reasons for the omission, only pointing to agency policy that says “core footage” must be publicly released within 30 days of police opening fire on a civilian.

Why isn’t there a separate unit that specializes in wellness checks? One that includes social workers and EMTs?

My city actually does have a separate unit, but like they’re still armed police, and they’re still a part of the police department. They also have like zero access to any extra resources. It’s honestly sad. They hosted a training session for my department (library) once and it was not apparent how they differed from the police in any way other than extra training. I’m sure if I called them on a patron they’d be so chill that I got a special unit to come out. /s
