So I accidentally used a lot of ginger for my starter ginger bug, maybe 7-10cm or so, and topped it up with sugar and water. I didn’t measure the sugar in grams and eyeballed it, but counted 10 tablespoons. I used about 6-7 cups of water to top it up.

Do I have to feed it more sugar and ginger daily, or can I simply leave it for a week?

I have some ginger left if needed, but it doesn’t have any peel on it left.

Thanks in advance!

I always feed once a day, stir twice a day. First day feed only sugar, next day sugar & ginger. I’m not sure about starting with that much sugar. Always use 2 big spoons of ginger, 2 big spoons of sugar, 2 cups of water to start mine. Definitely at least stir it two times a day. Worst case, you have to throw it out & learn something, right?

Exactly! So far it seems to be healthy and active, but next time I’m gonna use the ratio you mentioned.

I’ve been stirring it once a day when I feed it but will probably stir it again tonight too.

You want to make sure there is enough sugar for the yeasts et al. More ginger shouldn’t be necessary. I would taste it, and judge the sugar levels that way. If it is getting sour, then take a small portion out and put that in fresh sugar water. If it’s still sweet, then I wouldn’t feed it.

      Ah yeah, makes sense.

I’ve been feeding it a teaspoon of sugar and ginger since it started, and its starting to foam and bubble pretty nicely. I think I’ll taste it tomorrow and if it tastes very sweet, I’ll stop feeding it for a couple days.

So far so good, the aroma has gone from a very strong ginger smell to a yeasty ginger smell so it seems to be working very well.
