Don’t we need to invent sustainable fusion first?
So… This would be a research center?
CFS is currently completing development of its fusion demonstration machine, SPARC, at its headquarters in Devens, Massachusetts. SPARC is expected to produce its first plasma in 2026 and net fusion energy shortly after, demonstrating for the first time a commercially relevant design that will produce more power than it consumes. SPARC will pave the way for ARC, which is expected to deliver power to the grid in the early 2030s.
I know that’s what they say, but if sustainable fusion was a reality I would have expected it to be much bigger news
More cynically, I’m dubious the current media complex would report heavily on something that:
- disrupts some of the feudal infrastructure chain
- most people don’t understand
- the oligarchs certainly don’t understand
I was equally confused when I read this article. I guess they’re just so sure it’s going to happen that they’re at this stage?
I guess I expect more fanfare once they produce net positive energy for a usable amount of time?
Yeah, I guess 6 years away is a improvement over the usual 20 years away.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say this is more of a PR stunt
/shrug. I hope not. But have literally no idea.
They will just figure it out as they go
