NEW YORK CITY – Times Magazine has announced that Donald Trump has been named in their latest issue as their Person of the year, stretching the definition of “person” to its absolute limit.
They’ve selected horrible people as “person of the year” in times past. It’s about impact, and there’s no denying that Donald Trump has given rise to a gigantic cult of personality and amplified/emboldened/propelled the worst people in societies around the globe.
The impact he’s had on the world is immense and terrible.
I can see that, but Netanyahu hasn’t inspired a surge of fascism around the world, even in staunchly antifascist countries (see what’s happening in East Germany and Canada, for example). And granted, part of that is people who see Trump as a convenient distraction or inflection point, but it’s nevertheless true that Trump has had more global influence than Netanyahu or even Putin.
Times always chooses the election winner as person of the year. This isn’t some honorific, they’ve done it for decades.
