Summary

Florida students are attending Saturday classes at museums, libraries, and churches to learn Black history often omitted from public schools.

Grassroots programs, led by community advocates, cover topics like lynchings, segregation, and the Civil Rights Movement.

Despite a 1994 state mandate to teach African American history, instruction remains inconsistent, with only 30 of 67 school districts offering standalone courses.

Advocates blame political restrictions under Gov. Ron DeSantis, including bans on race-based discussions and blocking AP African American Studies.
