Summary
France commemorated the 10th anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo terror attack, with President Macron and Mayor Anne Hidalgo leading tributes at the former offices where 12 people were killed by al Qaeda-linked gunmen in January 2015.
The massacre, sparked by the magazine’s cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed, ignited global debates on free speech and religious tensions.
Survivors emphasized satire as a form of resilience, while public support for freedom of expression remains high.
The anniversary prompts reflection on France’s values and the enduring legacy of “Je Suis Charlie.”
Feels like this happened way longer ago but I guess the last ten years have really been a slog
It’s a very long time ago when measured in colonial violence committed by French people.
The French are colonizers, but that doesn’t make killing 12 innocents right.

I don’t like what they made either, but they didn’t deserve to be fucking killed for it.

I don’t know, personally i’d rather be discriminated against than shot.

The most hypocritical event the west has ever experienced. While bombing the entire middle east to rubble without a single care in the world for “colateral damage”, every single western leader falls in line to defend racism and Islamophobia.
With the genocide in Gaza going on now it becomes more clear than ever how little actual moral values these western politicians truly hold. Suddenly you cannot criticize Israel because that would be antisemitic.
And woe those who criticize religion of which its practitioners are not white. Despite it not even being a criticism of a religion.
10 years and not much has changed. The violent extremists are still out there. Charly Hebdo just made some mediocre comics and they got executed for it.
Just take a look at the life of Salman Rushdie.
Some humans are heinous. (No, i dont talk about the peaceful people which just take hope and strength from their belief. The violent ones. And the ones who use religion opportunistically for their cause.)
Thanks for the interesting read.
To clarify: I mentioned him, as a person who had to endure murder threats and assassination attempts (for decades) because he openly stated his thoughts. I haven’t read his books or know his opinions. My point is that his life is threatened for writing up his ideas.
It can’t be said clear enough that Israel’s military is committing horrible crimes in Gaza. This can’t be justified. That’s a point which doesn’t need to be argued about I think. Everyone who stands up to end the suffering is right. On the other side it is really complicated to talk about anything besides this point.

Seriously these people would post pity for black people shooting up a KKK meeting.
Lol nobody cares about racist colonizers fucking around and finding out.
France and colonialism need to be studied and their past mistakes interrogated, but being a dipshit apologist for fundamentalist extremist subhumans is substantially worse, because its happening now, and you actually know better.
Any comments on the kefalah system or insight into how Islam spread around the middle east? (hint: it was also colonialism dummy, just a kind you seem to think is acceptable as opposed to France’s) Interestingly the racist colonisers stopped using capital punishment, albeit way too recently still, but they’re not still fucking crucifying people like fucking savages for aposty.
Supporters of ignorant turds that can’t handle a secular state’s media’s fundamental right to satirise a pedophile cult leader from 500 years ago should go retreat to the shadows from where they came. You might believe immensely in your god or prophet, but they dont exist in the reality of other people better educated, more inquisitive, or more fortunate not to be brainwashed into that belief by birth or oppression. Killing people who dont share your favourite religious text is stone age behaviour and the mark of an animal, not a human being.
Dont you dare pollute the legitimately necessary discourse about historical wrongdoings in the world with justifications of terrorism because you never opened more than one book before.
Celebrating people that reduced themselves and their community to barbarism because they couldn’t mind their own fucking business in a multicultural society is pathetic and you should aspire to be better than that before someone tricks you into doing something stupid and dangerous.

I for one don’t enjoy people being executed for the crime of drawing mean pictures.

I don’t support capital punishment in any context.
