You will get a fully usable desktop with browser, media player and so on; and you will get a feel to whether things are working for you or not without altering anything on your PC. I’m linking to Ubuntu’s documentation on it, but many other Linux distributions support this feature https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/try-ubuntu-before-you-install
