more adventures on rednote mostly because it’s entertaining how mad people get when i talk about it :3 /halfjoke

this was posted 12/31 btw so i don’t think “the mods haven’t gotten to it yet” is a real thing

#le is common in parallel to the anglosphere’s #wlw which i think is adorable

my number one qualm with little red book so far is there is no native translation like tiktok has. lots of google translate is necessary to get the social media to social :P

necessary disclaimer: fuck the CCP and all the real violence and repression they do. just want to give credit given where due, and so far here im just seeing a lot of assumptions with no evidence? so im gonna post what my experience is :) i welcome all to do the same

The issue is that lots of people joining, self aware or not, validates the platform in normie users eyes. I know this cant be solved on an individualist level, because humans are tribal creatures, but its still tough to watch every time it happens.

I frequently see post aroilund here asking “Is service X or website Y trustworthy?” and my thought is always “No, ofcourse not.” Anything thats not running on your computer is inherently untrusthworthy.

Yup. Wish there could be a migration to an actually decent open platform but we’re all hung up with underfunding and personal qualms getting in the way. “I won’t use PixelFed because it doesn’t have a dark mode” is a literal comment I have seen from a Lemmy user.

Ridiculous patterns of behavior on both sides 😭

Other people aren’t going to RedNote for political reasons. I’m not going to RedNote because I was never into TikTok.

I’m barely into YouTube, and I have no desire to jump back into short form algorithm driven stuff after a decade away from that noise. Deleting most socials as teen was the correct move. I only missed out on connecting with people I already knew.

Feeds are the bane of my existence. I don’t even look at my Lemmy feed. Instead, I check on individual communities and sort by new. Communities being smaller is an advantage for me.

Yeah, I can’t stand feeds and short form videos either, it feels like I am dumber after watching just a little bit of them.

I do watch a lot of YouTube though, there are really great creators in lots of niche communities, there is also a lot of slop and crap, but it can be avoided, at least for now, although Google is slowly driving me up the wall with some of their stupid decisions that make no sense, even they aren’t benefiting from them.

Google drives me up a wall with their search engine the most. AI bs to hide the fact that SEO and paid promotions make it hard to find anything anymore 😒

I wanted to sign up for pixelfed but now finding out there’s no dark mode makes me not want to.

Please understand that some of us with neurodivergence can’t handle light mode, it’s too straining on the eyes and physically hurts.

iOS has had smart invert capabilities for several years now.

On Android it’s trivial to install a dark mode browser extension and I think some versions also have smart invert too.

I can’t tell if you are being sarcastic;* I absolutely understand the plight but there have been tools to support you using any app without a native dark mode. If having to change a couple settings is more of a turn-off for people than the privacy nightmare that’s every corporate app… well I think that exposes your priorities pretty well.

(*edit: apologies, you were being sincere. i have seen people use similar language to be hateful and ableist on the internet so i felt the need to cover all my bases but now that i know you were being genuine i retract that.)

I’m unaware of these features as I’m used to setting dark mode in each app but your overall comment reeks of ableism - I am neurodivergent, and I have to use my phone in dark mode. I had a TBI as a teenager leading to permanent light sensitivity and migraines and I’m also on the spectrum.

Also I’m banned from Instagram, so no, it’s not about priorities and even if it were, accessibility comes first.

i’m sorry you feel impinged on by me suggesting features that i and plenty of my neurodivergent or visually impaired acquaintances find to be helpful. features you admit you didn’t know about and might actually be helpful just as they have been for me.

you do not need to find them helpful because no accessibility system is perfect. but no need to call me ableist. that’s just fucking cringe. :( have a good one and maybe be nicer to people.

You chose to insult me by assuming my priorities and thinking my reference to being neurodivergent was sarcastic. Then when that is pointed out, you tone police me to be nicer? For using the word ableism, which is what you were engaging in? Do better.

And now you’ve edited your comment. So I look like the asshole, great.

                  assuming my priorities

I said “I can’t tell”; the exact opposite of assuming. And my edit was to apologize for my communicated confusion, a grace that I continue to extend to you: I apologize for not knowing if you were being sarcastic.

You don’t have to accept my apology but you can please stop harassing me about a mistake I corrected.
