How long has this Weekly Show been happening? That was a great conversation, and it only made me like AOC more.

Why should we be rebuilding the Democratic party. Its should have been taken behind the shed in the 1860s. That it survived the shit show of 1968 and Reagan is a miracle.

Something, anything else an inch to the left of it with an ounce less “controlled opposition” feeling would be a huge improvement for all of us.

It didn’t survive the shit show of 1968, though.

      Before: FDR, Truman, JFK

Then: They shot a few of activists and Democrats, just to send a message

Also: A handful of DNC insiders and Chicago cops convinced the passionate left that supporting Democrats was a game for suckers, idiots, and masochists

After: Just a bloodbath. Except for Carter, nobody won until 24 years later. Anyone who was anywhere on the left got absolutely creamed. Finally, Clinton hit on the formula of simply abandoning the left voters, since they weren’t voting for him anyway, and running on fiscal conservatism, increased police, NATO bombing, war on drugs, and playing the saxophone.

The party tried to do what it had been doing with JFK, for a few cycles, and the voters simply weren’t interested, so they adapted for TV and started playing the game of running people who were engaging, charismatic, and a few inches to the left of Reagan. And you know what? It worked, and they started winning elections again.

And all the Democrats of the modern day cut their teeth during that era, and now they’re a billion years old, but they’re still in charge.

I think but for a few days in 1968, and a few days after the election in 2000, we might be in a whole different world. Instead, we got the nightmare timeline, with these absolute drones and grifters running the only leftwards thing that’s on offer anywhere near the levers of power.

If there is any consolation to be had in the whole story, it is that big changes to the timeline can happen. We just need them to be in the right direction for once.

I’m still watching the video. The interview with AOC is absolutely phenomenal.
