Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, who has a history of getting his predictions right, caused a stir last week with a report claiming to reveal Meta’s smartglasses and AR roadmap through 2027. He did not say anything about VR products.
In his latest Power On newsletter on Sunday, he mentions them in passing, writing
“Meta is working on Quest 4 VR goggles, as well as a new high-end model that could eventually become a successor to the Quest Pro mixed-reality headset, I’m told.”
It is clear that Samsung and Google will put pressure on Meta this year with the premium headset Project Moohan and Meta could consider a response. Meta is working with ASUS on a headset that reportedly offers eye and face tracking. Gurman’s source may have been referring to this product, the release year of which is not yet known.
We will have to wait and see what direction Meta’s plans take. As always, keep in mind that Meta has multiple hardware prototypes in development at any given time, and only a few of these will actually become products. A lot can happen between now and 2027 and beyond.
Fuck that fascist weasel, Zuckerberg
Fuck Meta
I think I would rather drag myself across a mile of broken glass than have anything to do with Meta.
I am going to switch to a non meta headset this next year. My Quest Pro has been a nightmare when it comes to the software updates from Meta. I am glad they left this gap to be filled by other companies at the high end for VR.
What price would be right for you for a direct quest pro upgrade using android XR?
I am hopeful for a device that is under $2k.
Same. I’m hoping for $1500 USD wich ends up being about $2500 CAD for me. It’s a lot of money and i’m not 100% sure if it’s really worth the upgrade but the experience with the quest pro will only go down from here.
I think i would prefer to go and try another OS for my next headset. The quest pro equivalent from asus sounds cool but it feels too similar to the quest pro to me and idk how much of an upgrade it would be and it’s also running meta’s OS. Android XR will most likely have some weird quirks that needs to be fixed over time so the experience at first might suffer and i’m not sure if i would enjoy the steam OS base of the deckard software. I’m very excited to see how they will all work with all their various strengths and weaknesses!
What other OS? Quest works as a Steam headset or you can use their own OS.
Yes. I’m using it 95% of the time as a PC headset but the OS of the headset still changes the experience. Android XR might have characteristics from the android phones that i would prefer compared to the meta android based OS that still feel weird in some ways and don’t let me change basic stuff that every samsung phone i had was able to change. Meta is pretty rigid in what they let people touch in their settings i think. And steam OS on VR mobile device sounds interesting but i’m still too ealry in my linux journey to say if it would be good for me.
