The way you’d do it was to go into the general direction the person indicated and then ask someone else. Source: I’m old enough to have done this. The last time someone asked me for the way was probably about ten years ago. The guy only spoke French and was driving around Germany without a map or any sort of clue what he was doing.

Thank god for map apps because yeah, I’ll forget your directions 2 seconds after hearing them, though once I’ve done the journey I’ll usually remember it.
