Not directly Canadian news, but given Saturday’s events, it’s relevant:
Mexico has been preparing possible retaliatory tariffs on imports from the U.S., ranging from 5% to 20%, on pork, cheese, fresh produce, manufactured steel and aluminum, according to sources familiar with the matter. The auto industry would initially be exempt, they said.
How about, 100% on anything by Tesla, or musks other ventures. 100% on bourbon for them continuing to vote in McConnell.
Yeah. I’m not clear what the tariffs are on. But I guess we’ll find out.
Sounds like Mexico is also going the targeted retaliation route.
I expect coordinating the reaponses for maximum impact was a big part of the extended discussion Trudeau was having with the Mexican president that delayed the start of his announcement.
I wouldn’t hold my hopes about México, the last presidential term invested hard (and I mean HARD) on disinformation, which meant a huge investment on xitter, the current one is keeping that trend going, so if they want to keep that propaganda going, they are going to be forced to bend over since Meta and Xitter are allied with Trump (and most mexicans are technologically ignorants who hate anything that isn’t the mainstream apps, so they absolutely need those to keep the propaganda going). Of course they could block xitter and meta like Brasil did, but we don’t have the balls.
Also, since the last term and still going, they have been trigger happy firing every capable person who could call them out or criticize them (see the stupidity about voting for the judges and how they have assigned the shittiest picks they could find as an example), they made sure to strengthen the nepotism and corruption… so we basically have zero competent people on places that matter that could plan this shit.Oh, we also have a stupidly weak internal economy thanks to bending over everything to the narcos and (nowadays) to the militia, so either another country sweeps in and backs us up (most likely china will bend us over) or things are gonna get nastier.
I assume Trudeau’s best bet is to literally tell mexican goverment what to do and how, because if we are left alone, we are going to bend over to Trump, just like the expresident did (and he is still pulling the strings behind the curtain so… maybe).
