Explanation for anyone who needs it:
“My Shayla” is a meme on tiktok derived from a video of actor Tyrese Gibson crying on an Instagram Live about losing custody of his daughter Shayla. It is generally used as a sound for people missing a person, a space or time (eg. your childhood), or just thinking about their pets while they’re at work. In this case, Tiktok is replacing Shayla for the OP.
Many US users of Tiktok post-ban have commented that their algorithm is less personalized and more geared towards outrage content. As such, the app no longer has the original vibes, and is now suspected as another delivery method of propaganda for the Trump administration. They are now seeking alternatives.
To express their disappointment, another user is saying they have had a “no bones day” since the return of the app. This refers to a famous pug named Noodle on Tiktok who’s owner posted videos of them lifting Noodle up and seeing if Noodle will stand up on their own or fall over. If Noodles stood up, it was a high energy therefore “bones” day, and if Noodles fell over, it was a low energy “no bones day”.
The final poster makes a humourous observation that without Tiktok, they would not have understood the previous conversation, and wishes “old Tiktok” to rest in peace.
Some additional nice commentary: Older observers have chimed into this conversation reminiscing about their own “lost” or enshittified websites and platforms (stumbleupon, addictinggames/other flash sites, Homestarrunner, Vine, MSN Messenger, MySpace, Encarta, Napsters, Last. fm, hobby forums, etc.) They have tried to assure younger people, who socialize more online than any other generation, that there will be other options and opportunities to gather in communities again (to mixed results).
You made and solved a problem. (to understand this sceenshot)
I’m practicing my skills for climbing to middle management 😤
You just need to perfect the act of adding fluff work in between the creating then solving problems. That way the create step can’t be traced back to you.
Nice work, you’re sure to shoot up the ranks!
Thanks !

No Cap is a slang term used as an alternative to “no lie” to tell people you’re serious about something and not lying.
You got it, fellow kid!
Is cap short for something, or just a random word selected here?
I don’t know. I just googled all of these terms as I am … old. Origin of “no cap” comes from “high capping” (rap lyrics). https://amp.knowyourmeme.com/memes/no-cap-cap
I think it refers to a cap (hat), because culturally when you take off your cap it means you are being truthful. Similar to the term “hat in hand”I looked into it more and seems like the origins of cap meaning to lie is unclear. So looks like I was off base
Hoooly fuck, seeing that video of Gibson crying and then seeing the memes people made of it. Teenagers scare the living shit out of me.
Wow, thanks for the additional context!
No problem! My dad told me today that he wants to laugh at the stuff I laugh at, but just doesn’t have the cultural context for it. So I’ve decided to that I should just explain things to him, and bring that energy to Lemmy as well. Shit is rough, we should be able to laugh together at least.
Awesome, what a great relationship to have with your dad and his willingness to learn more about what makes you laugh!
Thank you for the energy you bring to Lemmy; I will continue to try to grow and learn from many like you!
Now do your usernma
