Summary

Transparency International’s 2024 Corruption Perceptions Index warns that corruption is obstructing climate action by weakening policies and governance.

Brazil, the host of COP30, received its worst-ever score of 34, reflecting rising corruption. Germany fell to 15th place due to opaque political financing, with concerns over large foreign donations to far-right parties.

Wealthy nations like the U.S., Canada, and New Zealand also saw declines.

The report found that 85% of the global population lives in countries with high corruption, with South Sudan ranking worst and Denmark best.
