I’m a 16-year-old junior in high school, currently in my third year of German. My teacher is a native speaker and well-liked for being friendly, especially with parents and family members of students who’ve had her in the past. I’ve always been polite and respectful in class, never had any behavioral problems, and maintain an A average. There’s a senior in my class (let’s call her “Bev”) who the teacher seems to favor since she’s taught Bev’s brothers too. Bev constantly bullies me—shouting at me every day when I walk in, giving me dirty looks in the hallway, and just making me dread coming to class. One time, I was working on a project by my friends’ desks, and Bev yelled at me to “take a seat” because my “butt was bothering the heck out of her.” I told her to shut up and look away. My teacher was right there, but she didn’t intervene. So, I went to talk to my teacher during lunch to explain how Bev’s behavior made me feel and asked if she could address it. Instead of helping, my teacher made excuses for Bev, saying she was stressed about applying to college and that it was her last year, as if that justified her behavior. The teacher didn’t say anything to Bev, just rearranged the desks. That was the last straw. The next morning, I went to the principal and explained what was happening—how Bev was bullying me and how my teacher was enabling it due to her closeness with Bev’s family. Later that day, we had a substitute teacher. The next day, when my teacher returned, she seemed different—grumpy, and we just did independent work for the class period. I went home and told my mom what happened. She was upset, saying I should’ve just handled it directly with the teacher. She also pointed out that teachers are overworked and underpaid, and by reporting her, I only made her job harder. My mom suggested the teacher was trying to be fair to both sides, but I don’t think she was handling the situation correctly. So, am I the AH for reporting my teacher to the principal?
