He directed the 1978 Lord of the Rings animated film.

It’s sort of a shame that he is primarily known for making semi-pornography. He also made probably the first high-quality adaptation of The Lord of the Rings, and “American Pop,” and some excellent kids’ cartoons like Mighty Mouse, and in general pushed the medium of animation forward in really profound ways which are explored in that little video. Watching it was what inspired me to post the quote.
This was one of the few animated movies for rent when I was a kid. Lord of the Rings, the Hobbit, Light Years, Akira, and Ninja Scroll were pretty much the entire animated movie shelf when I was wee.
