Could legal marijuana be changing how we treat anxiety? A new study in JAMA Network Open reveals that in states with legal cannabis, fewer patients are filling prescriptions for anti-anxiety medications like benzodiazepines.
One of the reasons I smoke is because it helps with my anxiety. I was prescribed something a while back for anxiety, but it was literally something you take only when experiencing a panic attack. If I am high on weed, I won’t experience a panic attack in the first place, so why even bother with the prescription pills?
That’s because it’s only a Band-Aid that isn’t permanently defeating your anxiety; it just stops it when you’re high, but it’s not feasible to simply be high all the time. That’s not a solution. You need to learn to manage and reduce your anxiety without relying (at least, so regularly) on a mind-altering substance—ideally, without any of your mentioned drugs.
And if it matters, I’m pro-marijuana, but mainly for physical pain and fatigue. Based on my observations, using it for anxiety is a trap (unless it’s for temporarily through-the-roof levels due to a specific situation, like a breakup or family death or something)—though, to be fair, it’s still better than alcohol or even worse stuff out there.
