Posted speed limits in nearly 200 Mississauga school zones will soon increase to 40 km/h
With the new amendments on local roads, City of Mississauga officials said the speed limit will remain 30 km/h from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday, and outside that period will be increased to 40 km/h. The move was prompted by complaints from drivers that the 30 km/h limit was too low during times when there were no students and other people around.
That’s what it’s like where I am at. 45 is normal, but during
school hoursdrop off and pick up times for the schools it’s 25. They have flashing lights on each side of the school zone and it’s hard to miss. With morning traffic you are only going to go 25 anyway, so it’s not like it’s a huge issue.
They’re 20 around here, which is crazy slow, I think 25 would be a good speed, not quite crawling but plenty of reaction time.
Trouble is in Ontario drivers rarely obey the posted limits and drive over the limit on average 10 ~ 20kph.
This means drivers generally (in mph), would be traveling at 30 ~ 40mph in a posted 25mph zone.
ie. 40kph = drivers traveling at 50-60kph.
As other have said, the best way to alert drivers to posted speed limits is with the proper redesign of roadways to meet/reflect the posted signage.
Best way to think about this is a interstate hwy. If the posted limit is changed in a section of the hwy without any change in the roadway design, such as norrower lanes, or change in sightlines, people will generally ignore the posted limit and continue as if nothing has changed along their route.
I can see that. That’s normally how drivers over here drive, aside from schoolzones, those are typically on the nose. Our police departments don’t fuck around when handing out tickets for it.
