Which Should Web You Browser Use?
Thank you for seeing what I saw. My brain is fucked after seeing that.
Obviously #link2gang ;)
Going to watch today thanks!
So for some reason, his videos are having issues coming across on peertube and piefed. Tried to comment and piefed cant see the video. peertube let me comment but its not showing up on his instance. Might also be a delay not sure.
So I guess ill leave this here:
In the video, you asked how we thought of librewolf after a couple of days.
Obviously links2 is the best browser (#links2gang). But if you want to watch videos, I suppose librewolf will do ;)
So far, I like librewolf quite a bit. Its install didnt take too long and it seems to be doing everything it says on the website. I looked at the code on codeberg and its interesting a vast majority of the code is in rust and applying patches to pinned Firefox releases. That means, for better or worse, the software is tied to Firefox the organization. They work with the code as a series of patches on top of firefox. An interesting dynamic. Im not sure how long lasting it will be, but it seems to work for a majority of use cases I use it for. Daily browsing, Discord, lemmy, peertube, etc… anything that works with firefox works with librewolf for what I see.
It comes with ublock origin which saves me some time on the initial setup. I also threw on a couple of other extensions. I have a pihole so it looks like its not doing anything when it comes to spying (firefox does some strange stuff, but nothing too bad in my opinion). Telemetry is indeed stripped out. Because of that, timezones are not set up and times can be widely wrong on some sites. And if a site is relying on that, it may cause issues.
I installed the browser via a deb but also wanted to give a shot with the compilation process. Its MUCH easier than firefox compiling it yourself. It takes quite some time (over an hour for me) to compile, but once it does, its the same as the deb. Which is nice! Means I can make my own adjustments if I see fit, although again its mostly just Firefox.
The biggest takeaway I got form the project is its just a very customized/modded version of Firefox. it meets my needs for the moment. Ill still have FF/Chrome in case some gov website needs them, but for now, its a decent browser.
