Instead of leaving Xitter, they left Mastodon. Proton’s trend is not inspiring confidence and this feels like another step backwards.
They can’t control the narrative on Mastodon so they left
I made a support case since I’m a Visionary customer and supposedly they’re keen to know my opinions. What I got back was how incredibly important my Visionary opinions are to them, and then just the same exact canned response as they had already posted.
Obviously it has nothing to do with the toll it takes on them to handle Mastodon in addition to Bluesky, so I’m leaning towards your explanation as well.
This happened weeks ago no?
Correct. They went from being on 15 socials to I think 12 and no one cared about the other ones.
OMG they quit my favorite social network that nobody knows about, they must be NAZIS! – Lemmy
If you endorse Trump you are a Nazi adjacent group/individual yes
Because Proton’s ambitions are to become a mainstream player, like gmail or outlook.
Tuta or Mullvad are happy being services used by people like us.
Is Mullvad offering mail services?
I wish, but it’s just VPN. I meant as two examples for the main Proton competitors (mail and vpn).
Goodby proton, it has been nice.
What exactly does that mean? I have switched to proton because of their open-source nature and to branch out from google. I don’t really care what the proton founders are doing as long as my data isn’t sold by google. In that case nothing will change for me, am I right?
I’m still on Proton (vpn + mail) and I’m not leaving. They are rivalled only by Mullvad for the vpn IMO, and Switzerland has better security laws.
They leaving mastodon is unfortunate but it’s just that IMO. The article has been posted many times BTW and it stirred some concerns the first time.
Hate to break it to you, but “swiss security laws” don’t mean jack if your outside of Switzerland. In 2022, ProtonMail Complied with 5,957 Data Requests from the FBI. See here.
As a Swiss national, please don’t blindly believe you’re immune because it’s Swiss and that the Swiss law has got you covered. Swiss companies are just as shady as American ones.
That statistic isn’t particularly useful. They complied with requests, but their response might have been “We don’t know anything.”
The only thing they can provide in regards to email is an IP address, which can be circumvented by using the VPN, which doesn’t log IP addresses. You obviously shouldn’t have a recovery email on your account, so they can’t provide that.
In my case, I couldn’t care less if they provided my IP address. I’m not doing anything illegal, I just prefer my email to be stored encrypted so server admins can’t read it.
Thanks for the info, but what’s the alternative? Sweden with their dubious stuff with pirate bay and wikileaks? Any other country?
It sure is interesting though, and it sucks, but they doesn’t keep logs for what I have understood so there’s that for their VPN at least.
Maybe there just is no real solution?
Alternatives to Proton? Maybe check out Tuta Mail and Mailbox(dot)org from Germany if you haven’t. Both freemium and privacy-friendly :)
Yeah I always thought this too. Who’s supposedly better, Netherlands and Germany?
I switched to Mullvad. It’s been great so far.
Their email service is useless though.
I’ve used Mullvad (VPN) for years with zero complaints myself.
I switched to https://www.inbox.eu/en/ which is a classical email service so probably not good if you are Palestinian journalist, but the proton walled garden started to piss me off. Their apps suck essentially, the fucking android app for mail truncates the subject so it becomes impossible to use when you are dealing with subjects with long prefixes. The calendar app didn’t actually integrate with android at all, which is completely baffling. Couldn’t give 2 shits about drive and docs or vpn
Thanks for the reminder, just deleted my proton account.
What are good alternatives? I’ve been using their VPN, mail, and password manager (the Android app and browser extension).
I am using Protonmail for financial info only. So, I’d need something trustworthy and secure.
My instinct was to down vote you, thanks for sharing this information!
Don’t be so dramatic, they are not changing their privacy settings.
