Tesla was once an EV leader, but now struggles to keep up as Chinese automakers outpace it in sales, pricing, and innovation, especially in emerging markets
It’s kind of ironic how Tesla helped make electric cars cool and an attractive alternative to ICE cars with the model S.
And now Musk has managed to make Tesla the most uncool brand of car on the market.
As I see it, Tesla is finished as a major brand. They are already down in sales globally by almost 50%. And German carmakers are making strong offerings now (VW group, BMW and Mercedes), and the of course the Chinese are storming ahead with the fastest development cycle in the world.
On top of that Japan is making an entry too with Toyota launching 4 new EV models. I bet a lot of early Tesla customers came from Toyota, but now they want their customers back!
Apparently the American competition isn’t quite as strong, but still GM, Ford and Rivian are AFAIK making some decent competition.
With a 5 year development cycle, Tesla simply can’t keep up. the slow development is almost double of most other makers, and triple of what the Chinese are currently doing!!
Markets outside USA will be a very tough nut for Tesla to crack, because they’ve basically lost all advantages they used to have. In USA Tesla is somewhat protected by import tariffs, but even there I doubt Tesla can remain competitive when they lose the ability to trade EV/CO2 tax credits, which for years was what kept them afloat.
Musk managed to build a car company to record highs, and now he is destroying it again. And no, RoboTaxi will not be available this summer. And assisted FSD will remain assisted. And there is no manned base on Mars as there should have been 2024.
because Musk is a narcissistic megalomaniac dreamer and a liar, and he has gone insane. (Lost his pacifier as we say here)
TBH even if they got robo taxis working (and I think that’s a big if without lidar) they’d be even more of a lightning rod for vandalism than personal vehicles and dealerships. They’d more thoroughly represent Tesla than personal cars and they’d be safer targets than dealerships since they could be summoned into a known (camera free) environment which would minimize risk to anyone who wanted to paint it or drop a rock on it or whatever. Especially if they were active long enough for their behavior and routes to get predictable.
