It’s very eye opening. It troubles me that now that I know what those tricks are, I can see it used in the Alt Left as well as the Alt Right, but whichever direction it is applied in, the real trick is how to spot the difference between Truth vs. Lies.
Basically, if you’re in community with a bunch of young white guys who think they own the place, you might wanna have some talks with them sooner than later.
Tbf, there are several additional factors conjoining together there, including: (1) globalization and (2) automation. This is often how young people talk (and while this particular group of people were young men, is there a doubt that young women can be equally cruel?), and all the more so when they feel like others around them are supportive of their viewpoints, even if they are halfway across the world, brought together by new technology that has never been possible in the entire history of any civilization that Earth has ever seen (that we know of!:-P). So yeah, we’re in the process of adapting. Sadly, the USA likely will not survive this innovation. And bc of the nukes, and oh yeah there’s also climate change, it’s entirely possible that nobody else will either across the globe.
And for another thing, we cannot forget that certain outside influences are at play as well, which spin not merely misinformation but active disinformation. We’ve seen it here even on Lemmy, as bOtH sIdEs SaMe just prior to the USA election, though elections all across the world are being similarly targeted (and if not, then they should be? that’s just how the game is played, when certain players are involved, i.e. according to their set of rules and ethics).
I LOVE how the Alt-Right Playbook deconstructs that. Though tbh I love most of that channel’s videos, from video game walkthroughs and I especially loved that one about Protagony irt the Blade runner movie.
I would have recommended to anyone to just start watching every video that channel has ever made. Although these days, I’m not sure that I can keep recommending such a course of action - at some point if not quite now, someone doing that inside the USA might end up arrested or deported or at least turned down or perhaps fired from existing jobs based on one’s demonstrated video watching history (see DoGE filtering rules that cast exceedingly broad nets, despite many Many MANY false positives).
Innuendo Studios, maker of The Alt Right Playbook, has an earlier series specifically on this topic in Why are you so angry.
This is great. Thanks!!

And a live followup.
