When I was in Germany years ago, the cigarette boxes looked like straight cartoon poison with the giant skull and warning on them. Which, IMO, didn’t make them scary; it made them cooler.
They like pretending gore porn reduces smoking but realistically it has no effect. Its like showing domestic abuse victims on beer bottles, at best it does nothing.
And at worst?
Becomes a 'gotta catch em all’s trading card game to get all the pics, encouraging sales.
When I smoked my favourite one was “Smoking harms your baby”, as that’s something I’ll never have to worry about. The guy with the little breathing hole in his throat was cool too.
For those addicted, I agree. Does it stop people from picking up the habit in the first place?
I don’t think anyone that picks up nicotine is unaware of the long term consequences, at least for the last 80 years. I believe most of the negative pressure on smoking rates is price, not gore. Even in the US where these images are not added smoking has taken a downturn, and most severely in states with higher taxes on nicotine products.
They actually havent looked like that for years. The graphic photos are still there, but they are not allowed branding anymore and all cigarette boxes have to be the same grey/brown colour with a tiny font
