The fans in Winnipeg had a creative response after a goal was taken off the board for the Jets in Game 5 Thursday night against the Dallas Stars.
Mark Scheifele put the puck in the net for a second time late in the second period, but the goal was quickly called back because Scheifele redirected the puck with his hand, not his stick.
While there was really no dispute about the goal, the fans in Winnipeg responded with a loud chant of “should have kicked it” as the final seconds of the frame ticked down.
That chant, of course, is a reference to a controversial play in Game 3 of the series when Alex Petrovic scored a goal for the Stars after appearing to kick the puck towards the net. On that play, after a lengthy review, the NHL kept the goal on the board because Connor Hellebuyck “propelled” the puck into the net.
TBH, the reasoning applied on the kick goal could’ve applied to this one too. It went off Ottinger’s helmet prior to crossing the goal line. I don’t think the fans were out of line at all.
But was it PROPELLED?! This is an important distinction, which is why the rule book spends so much time on it…
Love it.
I’m not normally one for fan chants, but that was good comedy.
