The UN Open Source Principles, recently adopted by the UN Chief Executive Board’s Digital Technology Network (DTN)Opens a new window provide guidelines to promote collaboration and the adoption of open-source technologies within the UN and globally. Open Source United, a community of practice established by the DTN, works to advance open source technologies across UN agencies, funds and programmes. It encourages collaboration and scalable solutions to support delivery of UN mandates.

The UN Open Source Principles consist of eight guidelines that offer a framework for the use, development, and sharing of Open Source software across the organization.

      Schleswig-Hostein (Germany’s most northern state) ditches Microsoft for Linux and LibreOffice. Italy has published plans for its 23,000 Italian public administration organisations to focus on open source in public procurement. Switzerland mandates releasing open-source software (OSS) of the Federal government with its “Federal Law on the Use of Electronic Means for the Fulfillment of Government Tasks” (EMBAG).

      Yeah, it’s still a long way to go and there will be backlashes, but it’s the right direction imho.

      They might, but not everywhere IMO. Some countries already embraces FOSS, so it’s a step in the right direction at least. I mean imagine the opposite “need for proprietary software for security reasons” or some other bullshit.
