“We want to wean off of FEMA and we want to bring it down to the state level,” Trump said from the Oval Office. “The FEMA thing has not been a very successful experiment. Very, very expensive and it doesn’t get the job done.”
Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, said, “We all know from the past that FEMA has failed thousands, if not millions, of people. And President Trump does not want to see that continue into the future. So this agency fundamentally needs to go away as it exists.”
Trump explained on Tuesday how he recently gave $71 million “to a certain state” despite the fact that they wanted $120 million. Trump appeared to be talking about the $71 million sent to Missouri after the recent severe storms and tornadoes there in April and May. Missouri’s governor, Mike Kehoe, is a Republican, and he released a statement Monday saying the state appreciated Trump and was “grateful for the President’s leadership.”
It’s obvious where this is all headed. Trump wants to set up a system where those who show fealty get money, and those who don’t will have funds withheld. That’s not how the U.S. system is supposed to operate, but it’s clearly where we’re headed.
I don’t normally post things that trump says, but it does seem that he is in process of setting this up.
This is insane.
The red states become basically uninhabitable/ uninsurable because of hurricanes and tornados.
The problem is that Trump quite litterally has no concept of what government is or how it works. In his neutered brain this is “his money” that is being paid.
But Jesus Christ talk about a red states shooting themselves in the foot. This will completely collapse real estate markets in FL, AL, SC, GA, MS, KS, TX, all the gulf states…
If FEMA is done, the housing market in these places collapses because without FEMA, insurance prices would need to 2-5x. High home prices prop up local economies through property taxes. Home prices drop and local tax revenue drops.
Yes. California has wildfires. That isn’t jack shit compared to what severe weather does. The reasons fires are a big deal is because historically, they weren’t a substantial problem. The other difference is that you can manage your way out of most wildfire risk. You can’t do that with wind and hurricane.
He thinks he’s hurting blue states, but he’s mostly going to screw his voters.
There’s a 0% chance he gives the money currently earmarked for FEMA back to the individual states or redistributes it in a way that lower-risk states are paying more towards higher-risk states. The leopards are going to be well-fed from this stupidity, that’s for sure.
I don’t understand what he means by it “has not been a very successful experiment”. What does he think the goal of FEMA was? If it’s failed people, it’s because it keeps getting whittled down in the face of larger and more expensive disasters
