can i get early access for Super Mario Bros 3 while we’re at it? Gotta get in early on this 30 year old game.

I don’t mind games being in early access for a long time so much as I dislike that there’s no differentiation between games that are in early development and games that are mostly done. I’ve played early access games that are basically tech demos, and I’ve played early access games that might as well be full releases with some content updates pending. With thet much variability, the term ‘early access’ becomes near meaningless.

I do agree that having games sitting in early access for multiple years also contributes to the problem, especially when it seems like every developer of an early access game initially says that they expect to release a full version in 12-18 months.

yea thats my main problem with it. If the game isn’t ready after being sold for 8 years, then it actually is ready and the developer should shut the fuck up.

Yeah, or alternatively, if developers want to do open game development for an indefinite period of time, there should be a separate category for that. The early access tag should be for basically an open-beta ahead of a planned release, not a way to get people to pay you for a game that you’re never going to finish.
