Hello! I am new here, and likely so are you.

It’s great to see local communities online - and a great time to shape how we’d like to go on.

I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on a display name change from Wellington to The Whanaganui-a-Tara.

This would not change the URL, or stop people finding us by searching Wellington.

Tell us what you think… Go!

This is a great idea. It absolutely triggers the people we don’t want in here. :)

The place is formally known as Wellington, and referred to as such by most of it’s residents, I only know one person in real life that actually uses Te Whanganui a Tara.

The Wellington branch should just be called Wellington, or Wellington (Te Whanganui a Tara), not everything needs to be in Te Reo.

Totally agreed. I’ve got nothing against Te Reo, I love to learn more, but right now it’s just unclear.

Yes that is the status quo of today, however I hope it becomes a more even split as time goes on.

Putting it in front may seem a bit on the nose, but to me it’s respectful and helps push the balance towards normalising bilingualism in our country.

That is far too much of a mouthful to be in front, to be honest.

Also, I don’t think we’ll reach even 50% fluency in Maori in our lifetimes, it’s not a skill that has much practical use, especially if you aren’t Maori.

Agreed. We could change the name to to Wellington | Te Whanganui-a-Tara instead, which will also help identify the sub for visitors or folks who aren’t familiar with the Te Reo name.

I like this but suggest Wellington NZ because there’s a lot of Wellingtons out there. I agree including both names or Maori variant of regional name because students and visitors don’t necessarily know the Maori name yet.

Yes, for federated sites like Lemmy, think of it like email. The community is not “wellington” but [email protected] - the “!” helps us understand it’s not an email address.

If you are on another Lemmy instance and search for Wellington, it will show the full “[email protected]” probably along with others.

Wellington Region/Greater Wellington would be more inclusive. Which according to Wikipedia would be: Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui.

I’m pretty happy either way though, I can’t imagine many would have a problem with having both English and Reo Maori. Its downright standard these days. I enjoy having it. I’m nowhere near fluent though.

There’s a similar post in the South Island community (sorry, I don’t think Lemmy handles links too well if you’re subscribing from another instance): https://lemmy.nz/post/25709

Is anyone opposed to having this cover the Greater Wellington region rather than Wellington City?

Do we have opinions on punctuation?

    • Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui (Wellington)
    • Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui | Wellington
    • Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui / Wellington

And if we are saying the Wellington region, do we want that specified in the title or is “Wellington” enough?

Given that 95% of NZ speaks English, why not English first? Your one would cut off the actual name we’re looking for in shortened links etc. It’s also a bloody mouthful.

Every little bit helps to shift us towards bilingualism, which I think is great as we continue the slow, long overdue embrace the idea of a country run in partnership between Tangata Whenua and the rest of us folks

As @[email protected] mentioned, it’s about putting the names in front of us. Putting them second would contradict that purpose.

The community is [email protected]. The displayed name is longer when you visit the community, but if you’re searching for or linking to it, [email protected] is fine and is what will be prefilled by Lemmy (on the website, and maybe the app).

Te Upoko o te Ika a Māui | Wellington

      I like this one. ^

And if we are saying the Wellington region, do we want that specified in the title or is “Wellington” enough?

I don’t think it needs further clarification. Wellington/Greater Wellington/Wellington Region are used interchangeably.
