I remember when new iPhone releases would make headlines and people would crowd around computers to watch the live announcements. I remember sneaking out of work early once so I could be home in time to watch it with my housemates. Nowadays they’re so boring they barely get mentioned.
That’s a good thing, it’s a sign that smartphones as a technology have matured.
But it’s also boring. Innovation is fun.
Maybe we will see that kind of innovation in the VR space if the Apple headset really becomes the next big thing, but I have my doubts.
The $3500 price tag in times when nothing is affordable isn’t going to help.
Yeah the prospect of throwing down a couple of months rent… for precisely what value add (?) is going to be a hard sell for Apple.
Yeah you can watch a film, on your own, on a big virtual screen for $3500 rather than watch the tv that you already own in the company of your friends and family for free.
Or you can use your computer, but with a big floating virtual screen, which is a good thing I guess for $3500, or buy a large real monitor for $100+ dependant on demands, and not wear a heavy dorky headset with limited battery life.
There is nothing that other tech doesn’t do for cheaper (and often better) even when you combine the price of the multiple products you would have to buy to cover all use cases. Except maybe viewing weird 3D photos… great.
This product is isolating and antisocial with limited battery and it’s hugely expensive with no good usp. Looks to me like a rare Apple L.
Boring is good on a device that you use for anything critical. Boring is also good to reduce e-waste.
Iterative innovation also has a higher probability of being a net positive than breaking changes.

Back then each new iPhone was such a massive improvement over the last it was like Christmas day when you’d upgrade. Now the new phones are just slightly better than the one you own. So it is hard to get excited over a new $1000 phone when you just bought one two years ago.
Which is a really good thing, IMO.
I’m upgrading from a 12 to a 15 because of USB-C and the other improvements that have accumulated, and after that I’m leaving it alone for a long time.
If USB-C wasn’t there, I wouldn’t even bother as my 12 works perfectly fine, Safari feels snappy and this phone could last a good long while still.
I’ve got a 12 and sticking with it for now. The X won’t get the new iOS which I think means 6 years of firmware support. I can see this one lasting 5-6 years. Definitely a good thing - can remember avoiding iOS upgrades when they would slow down older phones beyond being usable.
Why is USB C enough of a reason to switch if your 12 works fine?
Because it’s the last holdout. I use mostly apple devices, and lightning is pretty much the only device I have that uses something other than usb c to charge. It would also make the “hey does anyone have a charger?” Question at parties or work a lot more tolerable.
Pretty much what the other poster says, plus the fact that there are other improvements that weren’t big enough to upgrade before, but USB-C tipped the scales.
I felt the same about android flagships, now it barely matters which one you buy almost all of them surpassed basic needs and expectations years ago
Exactly! The new features are getting more and more lackluster each year and it is all just novelty stuff you look at and go “neat!” but that’s about the extent of it.
worse, they’re just removing stuff now (like microsd support)
Phones these days removing stuff more than adding or optimizing them
I never understood that kind of hype. Also people camping in front of cinemas or stores. Why? It’s just some movie or toy. That behavior doesn’t seem healthy.
Wouldn’t it be funny if Apple took down their store intentionally so there would be headlines about it?
This happens ahead of every Apple product launch. No one ever covers it except Apple focused sites.

It’s gonna be funny if i15 becomes the bestselling iPhone due to USB-C. And shareholders will be like dude, these open standards actually sell, just go with them next time instead of all the proprietary shit
LMAO. The story will probably be that USB-C was barely being used until Apple wisely decided to start using it and the rest of the world followed suit.
Holy shit can you imagine? It’ll never happen, but like, imagine being able to pick up an Apple Silicon CPU like you’re buying a Ryzen or Intel CPU, and can just plop it in a mobo.
