I’m an android guy and my partner is iPhone, she isn’t very tech literate and has an old iPad.

I don’t want to connect the older iPad to my network but I’d like to get some MP4 videos on it of learning and Nursary rhymes for my daughter when on a car journey.

I’ve plugged it in but I can’t seem to drag and drop. I use Linux so not sure iTunes is an option, thank you.

Are there any tricks?

I would check out either VLC or Documents by Readdle. They both have a web interface you can launch where you can upload media through a browser with. Both have network drive capabilities and can play media well. I think VLC overall would be a simpler experience, but both are very capable for what you need.

This is the way. Exactly what I’m doing for my old iPad mini that can’t get any of the new streaming apps. I download some videos and upload them to the iPad with VLC’s web interface. Super easy and then they’re always available, internet or no.

      Just wanted to thank you.

In the end VLC worked great and was surprisingly easy!

I did another option and got the videos on the iPad but no app could see them, should have just VLC’d it from the start.

      VLC is such a treasure!

Yeah older iPadOS and IOS are a pain and require iTunes. I would try to setup Wine and installed iTunes.

Just remembered I have a windows 10 VM on my server that’s not been turned on in a long time. Might just install itunes there and pass the device through. Unreal, just want 2 mp4 files on it lol

Can modern ipads be mounted as a file system. It’s kinda annoying, going to try @plutolink suggestion.

I even tried just downloading them from a local webserver but safari on an older ipad can’t download, only stream the MP4.

No, modern iPads can also not be mounted as file system. But iTunes allows access to some application specific folders on the iPad

I recently had a similar problem with an old device. I used my mobile hotspot to allow me mobile device to connect to a data network. That way at least it’s still behind my mobile device’s security.

Are you sure that your mobile device acts as a firewall? That would be news to me.
