I’m enjoying my time on Lemmy so far, but to be honest, I don’t want to see the stuff coming out of Lemmygrad. Is there any way to block out whole instances at the user level?
No but you can sing up on a instance that blocks them (lemmygrad is basically blocked everywhere)
This really annoys me. One nice thing on reddit was, that /r/all was a very usable collection if you just blocked the subreddits you didn’t like.
I really miss that feature :-(
I hope that changes here before too long. Like yeah we can block communities (subreddits), but because this is the Fediverse, there’s a whole layer of instances, too. And it’s not uncommon for there to be horribly toxic instances floating around. It would be great to not have to wait for instance admins to de-federate from them.
Like yeah we can block communities (subreddits)
we can do that already? Then it’s missing in the app I’m using.
I’ll check the official web frontend of my instance.
We got an app for this? 😂 I thought it was work in progress since one page where I found one yesterday the links were broken. (Don’t remember anymore what site though) Where can I find one? Going to have to look little bit later on my own.
I tried Lemmur and Jerboa for Android from https://f-droid.org Both seem to be beta-ish.
I also saw a post here for an iPhone App but can’t remember the name.
EDIT: It’s called Mlem
I’m using jerboa, if you go to the community page of the community you want to block, then click the 3 dot menu, you can block the community from there.
That works. thanks!
Sadly Mlem does not work with kbin but I need to still test it out with Lemmy instance.
Oh yeah it might not be an app feature yet. I had to do it via the web.
It’s definitely possible in Jerboa
How can users check?
Page bottom, instances
Good to know!
A quick search tells me there is a feature you are supposed to be able to access that lets you filter on language. Beyond that it seems you need an instance. its not hard to run a private one really. Or you can find one that aligns with what you would want to see. This is often how it was done with useenet. you would find a BBS that filtered (or not) what you got. Some even allowed you some ability to pick later on.
The problem with the language filter is that I think it requires the person posting to select their language every time they post a comment or post. I looked at the language filter in my Lemmy settings and it says “if you don’t select undetermined, you won’t see most content”
agree, there need to be more tools there are a number of issue posts on these things on github, if you look for “lemmy github” youll find the UI and server repos, on the issues tab you can search for your issue and then upvote/show your support. If something you want is not there or is broken and not listed, post it up.
I think the only way some of this is going to get done is if its cataloged and clear people want/need it.
If you are running your own instance, you can add any instances you want blocked to your block list in the admin settings.
If you aren’t running your own instance, join an instance that blocks the instances you’d like blocked.
That’s a little clunky, but good to know.
There is a feature called “block community”, but so far it seems like it doesn’t really work cause when I click on it, nothing happens. Blocking users works, though. So maybe only a matter of time to block instances/communities?
So what I had to do was search for the community I want to block and block them from their main page. The settings page just shows you who you already blocked and lets you unblock them if desired. At least that’s how it works on the web interface.
Ah okay! I will try that out, thank you!
You can block communities you don’t like or users you don’t want to see. I’d imagine you could just manually block all the communities that are showing up in your feed from that instance.
Yeah that’s what I did with a few of the Lemmygrad communities. As well as all the German-language ones that flood my feed with posts I can’t read lol.
Instances can be blocked, but you’d need to be an admin on your instance. I don’t know of a user setting to filter an instance as of right now.

Literally just don’t subscribe to that instance and you won’t see their posts.
That works if I browse only my subbed communities, but sometimes I want to explore by all. It would be nice to be able to explicitly say “but not these instances.”
You can block a community to keep it out of the all feed for you, but there’s no one-stop-shop to block all the communities on an instance unless you admin an instance and defederate with them (which does much more than block their community posts, it prevents comments/posts/all interaction with all users that have accounts on that server, which may be just what you want or overkill to manage your all feed).
Its definitely overkill and im glad lemmy.world doesnt do it
Thanks, that’s good info! I may just block specific communities for now.
Agreed, it’s a lot of German posts from feddit.de.
Don’t you speak German?
Nein :(
It’s okay. Nobody’s perfect.
Danke :(
