Greetings all, and welcome to the Mythology board! I have recently embarked on an adventure through early Mesopotamian mythology, and intend to keep exploring more cultures moving forward through history. With that in mind, this space is meant to be a fun and open community for people to chat about their favorite mythologies, share what they have learned, ask questions, and hopefully we can all learn and experience the magic, myths, and legends from the many cultures that came before us.

    Thanks @boydster!

I’m currently exploring the Norse mythos. One of my grandparents is of Swedish descent and am really connecting with the runic alphabet and more animist type worship.

Awesome! I really like what I’ve read from Norse mythology so far. In fact, I just was finishing the first half of Jackson Crawford’s translation of the Poetic Edda earlier today (yeah, I know, I said I’m focusing on the Mesopotamian stuff, but I do get distracted…). That’s something I want to write a thread about at some point, to discuss the overlap with Tolkien’s writing among other things.

It’s really interesting how something like learning about the writing system a culture employed can make you immediately feel more connected to it.

Indeed. I learned Japanese (language and writing) for that reason. I’ve got Tolkien’s translation of Beowolf on my bedsite table, actually! Coming up soon!
