Israeli planes bombed the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt on Tuesday, even as an Israeli military spokesman encouraged Palestinians to use the border post to flee to safety.

Independent Egyptian news outlet Mada Masr, citing an employee at the border checkpoint, reported that Egypt had closed the crossing gate after a warning that Israel would bomb it.

Israeli planes bombed the crossing Monday evening and again on Tuesday after the damage was repaired, Mada Masr and Palestinian media reported.

An estimated 700 Palestinians have been killed in reprisal bombings in Gaza after Hamas gunmen launched a stunning attack on Israel on Saturday, massacring an estimated 900 Israelis.

More than 127,000 Palestinians have been displaced by the ongoing bombing, the U.N. said.

Earlier on Tuesday, Lieutenant-Colonel Richard Hecht, an Israeli military spokesman, suggested that Palestinians seeking refuge from the bombing could “get out” of Gaza through the Rafah crossing.

Hecht’s office later issued a statement: “Clarification: The Rafah crossing was open yesterday, but now it is closed.” The clarification didn’t mention a bombing.

Gaza’s Hamas-controlled interior ministry said in a statement that Egypt had warned staff on the Gaza side of the border crossing to evacuate due to an imminent bombing. Two Palestinian employees were injured, the ministry said.

The U.N. and humanitarian organizations are working to establish a humanitarian corridor through the Rafah crossing to bring medical supplies to Gaza. Israel on Monday declared a “total siege” of the territory.

I say the world collectively decides to take the land away from both of them until they can learn to get along.

(this is not a serious suggestion, I’m purposefully being hyperbolic)

I unironically endorse this as a completely serious suggestion. The Israeli government might be a failed state. You’d fucking think a Jewish nation would tear its own politicians limb from limb if the military started seizing land with genocidal excuses, but nope, people voted their most corrupt right-wing authoritarians back into power.

And it’s not like Palestine’s political discourse is better. They’re justifiably displeased with the situation, but coexistence doesn’t even get lip service. Palestinians openly want Israel erased, and Israelis tacitly want Palestine erased.

So fuck it. Let them both get what they want: rezone the whole trapezoid. Put it under UN administration, or make it a canton of Switzerland, or stick another star on the US flag, I don’t fucking care. They already have a shitload of our guns and money! Start handing out IDs and basic income, get a police force that’s only as racist as western nations’, and let people start hashing things out in a court system. For some stupid reason humans will bend over backwards to avoid violence, if they can even pretend there’s an appeals process.

Shove 'em together and make 'em see everyone else as their shared problem. Maybe in a generation or two they’ll only hate each other as much as Eastern European groups that outsiders can’t tell apart.

Are you really implying Hamas only targeted Israeli military and government targets in this recent offensive?

You imply it by saying Israel targets Palestinian people but Hamas targets Israel. Why not say Hamas targets Israeli people, being that they’ve just done so?

The distinction was being made between Hamas and Palestinian people. I think it’s a safe assumption that Hamas isn’t fighting the land of Israel itself, but instead the people. Sure, Israel (the land, the physical location) is definitely being damaged and attacked, but I’m certain the OP didn’t want to bring attention to some damaged environment- rather the dead and dying people.

I took it that way to. I think it was just worded in a way that can be taken two ways. In that case I go with what they say when you question it.

What’s the military significance of a border crossing, that is already under the control of an ally? Why bomb it at all? Why not just have it administratively closed

It’s pretty obvious that anyone simping over Israel doesn’t understand the situation; the apartheid that Israel has been forcing on Palestinians has caused this and there are no good guys in this conflict.

They aren’t attacking people though. You can condemn both sides for attacking civilians while realizing that this is a byproduct of the apartheid that has been inflicted on Palestinians.

I’ve literally said that both sides are wrong multiple times in this thread; the people simping for Israel are pretending that Israeli policy on Palestinians( you know, apartheid) has had nothing to do with this and the attack is unprecedented on a country that has done nothing wrong. Both sides are shit right now, but this is a direct consequence of what Israel has done for decades.

And this is why, no matter how fucked up Hamas’s actions were, the Israeli government doesn’t get to play the good guys. They’re pretty goddamn far from innocent. They’re at least half the reason Hamas is pissed enough to murder civilians. Palestine has civilians too, and they’ve been getting killed at ten times the rate of Israeli citizens, even though Israel has the overwhelming force and high technology needed to express power without war crimes and genocide.

What did the Israelian Army bomb at the border though? Did they attack civilians or was Hamas there?
