Hello!

This is a video showing how our Kohler toilet doesn’t seem to work anymore. Unlike most toilets though, instead of a flapper valve, there’s a “canister valve”. Typically the canister valve is pressed against the bottom of the reservoir, but at the moment, it feels like the canister valve has a spring that keeps it released. If I press down on it, the reservoir begins to fill, but as soon as I release it, the toilet starts to flush.

Most guides online say that a leaky toilet just needs the gasket replaced, but I’m wondering if, in this case, the entire canister valve should be replaced.

Thanks!

Start with the gasket. I replaced one in my Kohler toilet. Easy and cheap. You have to remove the cylinder to replace it, so you’ll have the opportunity to inspect it for damage.

The twisted chain was 100% the issue. I’m so amazed that you were able to catch that in that shitty video I uploaded above. Thanks again so much for your sharp eye!
