They live in Scandinavia and Europe east of Germany, so you probably never saw them if you’re not from those parts. Where I am, the hooded crow is the default crow you find everywhere. Magpies are smaller, have a more solid colour and tails that are pretty much as long as they are.
And they’re skittish as hell. I leave food out for magpies on my balcony and they eat there on a daily basis, but whenever they see me through the windows or god forbid on the balcony, they immediately fly away like 300m.
